If you want to look at what great flexibility can do for a wrestler, look no further than John Smith, an Olympic wrestling champion. His flexibility and smoothness would have him out-maneuver his opponents every time. Check out this YouTube video of him wrestling in the 1988 Olympic Trials.

FLEXIBILITY

Stretching and flexibility are often the most overlooked aspects in wrestling and in most other sports.

The truth is that flexibility is more important than you may ever realize. Dan Gable rates flexibility among his “7 essential ingredients of good wrestling”. In his book Coaching Wrestling Successfully he details how “using one’s flexibility to get into certain positions normally not attacked makes a wrestler feel very powerful” (pg 63). And he’s right! Just like strength, flexibility will give you that extra advantage that makes your wrestling just feel “easier”.

Also- have you ever tried scoring on someone with ridiculous flexibility? If you won or lost, think back to how hard it was to finish a takedown as they smoothly and painlessly resisted.

Like most wrestlers, I don't enjoy fluff in my workouts. I could never take stuff like "yoga at the beach" or "YouTube" yoga seriously. I want to get in, improve the machine that is my body, and get out. So I'm going to share to you my favorite non-fluff resource to learn and practice from.

Disclaimer: I am in no way being paid to promote Bodybuilding.com. I honestly think it's an amazing resource to share to wrestlers.

I used to bodybuild and the reason I left it was because I felt like it was a beauty pageant- not a sport. Other than the photos, you don't really have to worry about that stuff on BodyBuilding.com. It would be safe to say that it is the world's most extensive online library on exercise and nutrition. You can view videos, read articles, and even track your workouts to learn all you need.

The flexibility specific resources I really suggest that you look at is their 100+ stretching exercise list here - https://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/finder/?exercisetypeid=3

It's so easy! Check a muscle group that you want to see on the left side and watch through a video walkthrough of each exercise. I suggest to mix and match 14 at the end of each workout and at the beginning of each day for your own customized sessions. I have plenty of lower back pain, so I really hit the hamstrings and back stretches pretty well.

I also suggest that you you follow this workout, (video below) by Ashley Conrad for 20 minutes every day or every other day. Add up all those minutes to account for a year, and you'll see how flexible you can really become.

AFTER STRETCHING

After stretching after your workout or practice, cool down with some light cardio to get the blood pumping. If you can, also hit the sauna or hot shower to reward yourself for your hard workout and taking care of your body. This will also promote a faster recovery. Feel the endorphins rush!

I hope this information has helped you begin your journey to become a better wrestler, athlete, and person for taking care of your body. If you want to more help like this, please be sure to subscribe to the blog to not miss out on the next content to help you #DefyDefeat.

Stand Up. Defy Defeat!

The following announcement is from Abdullah Abu-Mahfouz, director of Stand Up, in regards to the Stand Up theatrical event in Hanford CA on April 27th, 6:30 PM at the Metro 4 Cinemas.

When we, the team at Reel Nation Media, set out to get Stand Up in theaters, we had one goal that prioritized over all else:

to inspire wrestlers across the nation to dig deep within themselves for true success, to illuminate the value of hard work, and to promote, support, and fund wrestling teams and organizations.

We were blessed with the opportunity to fulfill this goal for the Hanford West Wrestling Team when their high school head coach, Lance Brown, messaged Stand Up on Facebook. He got in touch with the interest to bring Stand Up to a theater near him to promote wrestling in his area, and school.

The Hanford West Huskies 2016-2017

We took a few moments to talk on the phone to Coach Brown about his team. He’s a very experienced coach who has helped many league champions reach their their goals.

“Hanford West is like the middle child that’s overpassed on a lot of things,” Brown expressed.

The high school is in the middle of two wrestling super powers in the area: Hanford High, and Sierra Pacific.

“The school’s wrestling team has to fight for everything it needs. We have to really work hard to get the kids onto the mats. Though like in the sport of wrestling, the harder you work, the better the reward- just like the film (Stand Up),” says Coach Brown.

Even though Hanford West’s program can be considered an underdog in the area, Coach Brown says they have promising years to come:

“We have an upcoming great team. A few wrestlers can definitely make it to states in the next 4 years. We already have had 37 divisional qualifiers go through in the past.”

One of the biggest challenges that the team faces is their decaying wrestling mats. Lance told us that the two mats they have have been in use for over 20 years, and are both beyond repair. Whenever he has asked for funds to replace the mats, he was told that they have to find funding himself.

“The culture of this area expects to fundraise. The district giving to such causes is not high on their agenda. Certain sports are just not as big as others, and unfortunately wrestling is one of those sports…” says Brown.

That is why Stand Up is offering all of its ticket proceeds from the Stand Up Theatrical Screening in Hanford to the Hanford West Wrestling Team for new wrestling mats!

The screening will be at the Metro 4 Cinemas on April 27th at 6:30 PM for this special one night screening. After the film, there will be an inspirational talk from a surprise legendary Californian wrestler that no one can spare to miss. Tickets can only be bought on Tugg at https://www.tugg.com/events/stand-up-igdf before April 20th. The event has to fill in 83 seats for it to actually happen.

If you’re not able to make it to the event, you can choose to donate to the team through the contributions on the bottom of the page at https://www.tugg.com/events/stand-up-igdf. You can earn special rewards like the special edition DVD of Stand Up.

We hope you join us on our mission to boost the Hanford West Wrestling Team on their path to #DefyDefeat! Let’s give back to wrestling, and come together for this awesome event. See you at the movies!!!

It’s happened to our teammates and even ourselves: a strange itchy spot seemingly pops out of nowhere at the end of practice. Coach’s face looks like he’s going to cry, and then tells you to go to the walk-in doctor he’s been using for years to get kids through skin checks. This time the doc gives you the pink slip that tells you “no wrestling until infection scabs over”. At this point, there is no chance for you to start in tomorrow’s line-up in your last match of the season.

Someone come play the violins.

According to the CDC (center for disease control) staph infections are are most common in contact sports like wrestling, where skin-on-skin and fluid contact are being exchanged.

"With skin infections, you can keep doing the right things, but still end up getting it. However, there are great steps that you can make to stay safe, relaxed, and secure." - Click to Tweet

We got your back! The team at Stand Up, the wrestling documentary film, is here to look after our wrestling family. We made this infographic/poster that you can email, print out as posters or flyers, post on your social media, or message to your team. Brains over brawn!

With good hygiene and some luck, you will go through the season unscathed, and save your team and self some serious stress. Stay healthy!
